Your Competitors Don't Have to Be Better. Just Easier to Find.

Imagine a homeowner with a leaking pipe, a bucket, and absolutely no interest in your company’s mission statement. They need a plumber.

One business has a clear website explaining what it fixes and where it works. Another has a slow website with a mysterious “Solutions” page. A third has no website at all.

You might be the best plumber of the three. You might still never get the call.

Being good at your work and being easy to find are different problems. Your experience solves the first. Your online presence needs to help solve the second.

First: give your business a proper home online

For a service business serious about winning work online, a useful website is basic equipment, not something to consider “when things quiet down.”

Your Google Business Profile matters, too. It helps people find you through Maps and local search, where accurate information, relevance, distance and prominence all play a role. A website belongs alongside that profile, not instead of it.

Your website gives you somewhere to answer the questions that matter: What do you do? Where do you work? Why should someone trust you? How do they contact you?

Even a referral needs somewhere to land. A neighbour makes the introduction; your website can help turn that introduction into an enquiry.

But simply having a website is only the first step.

Cartoon of a proud plumber standing in a workshop full of tools, certificates and a trophy, its entrance buried behind overgrown bushes, while a homeowner with a phone walks past toward a competitor's plainly signed shop where another plumber waves from the open door
The awards are on the wall. The bushes are in front of the door.

Next: make it work before making it fancy

Our homeowner opens your website. The logo appears. An enormous photograph begins its leisurely journey onto the screen. The phone number remains undiscovered.

They wanted a plumber, not the opening credits.

A modern website should load quickly, work properly on phones and computers, and make important information obvious. Google recommends a good overall page experience, including mobile usability and strong performance.

Those foundations can also support discoverability. Google’s ranking systems use Core Web Vitals: measures of loading performance, responsiveness and visual stability. Better scores don’t guarantee higher rankings, but improving poor performance can support your search efforts.

A fresh coat of pixels isn’t an SEO strategy. A fast, well-built website is a much better starting point.

Cartoon of a homeowner clutching his head at a leaking pipe dripping into a bucket, phone in hand. Two phone screens beside him: an ornate site still loading behind a snail, captioned 'too slow', and a plain plumbing page listing repairs, installations and maintenance above a green Call Now button, captioned 'just right'
The bucket is filling at the same rate on both screens.

Then: get found for your services, not just your name

Someone searching for your exact business name already knows you exist. The bigger opportunity is someone searching for “sump pump replacement” or “garage door repair.”

They know what they need. They don’t know you.

SEO, search engine optimization, helps search engines understand your website and helps people discover it through relevant searches. Speed and usability provide a foundation; targeted optimization builds on it.

Compare these two descriptions:

“Delivering quality solutions with excellence and integrity.”

“We repair blocked drains, leaking pipes and sump pumps for homeowners across Kitchener-Waterloo.”

The first could describe a plumber, a bank, or a particularly ambitious toaster. The second tells you what the business actually does.

Good SEO carries that clarity throughout the website: useful service pages, descriptive titles, logical navigation, and answers to customer questions. It also involves checking that search engines can access your content.

The objective isn’t to attract everyone on the internet. You don’t need someone three provinces away admiring your drain-cleaning page.

You need the right people, looking for the right service, where you actually work.

Now customers can ask AI, too

Our homeowner has another option:

“Find a plumber who replaces sump pumps and serves my neighbourhood.”

ChatGPT can search the web and provide relevant local results. That creates another route to discovery beyond the familiar list of Google results.

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is about being visible in AI-generated answers. Another acronym, unfortunately. Apparently, the website industry bills by the letter.

The practical work isn’t magic. Make your services and coverage explicit. Answer useful questions in readable text. Keep business details accurate, and make sure the behind-the-scenes information describing your business matches what visitors see. Google recommends these foundations for its AI search features.

There are technical checks, too. OpenAI recommends allowing its search crawler to access your website so the content can be included in ChatGPT search.

SEO and GEO overlap substantially. Google says established SEO practices remain relevant to its AI features, without special AI markup. The goal is better discoverability, not a guaranteed recommendation.

We can improve the website. We don’t have Google’s remote control.

Cartoon of a homeowner at a laptop between two websites. On the left, a glossy page for 'AquaFlow Solutions' headed 'Excellence in Every Drop', offering Innovation, Quality and Sustainability; a sticky note beside it asks what they actually do, where they work and how to contact them. On the right, a plumbing site listing drain repair, pipe leaks, sump pump installation and water heater service, serving Kitchener-Waterloo, with a Call Now button. A friendly robot points at the second one and says it has the information people are looking for.
Both businesses are invented. Only one of them says what it does.

You shouldn’t need a second career to get this right

You learned your trade. Now you’re apparently supposed to understand website performance, search indexing and AI crawlers.

Or you could get someone who does.
